Amrita appeared in a few advertising commercials while studying at the Sophia College, she also received a couple of offers from bollywood but turned them down as she wanted to complete her degree. Amrita has featured in TV commercials for well known brands like Cadbury’s Perk, Bru Coffee, Close-Up, Wrigley Chewing Gum, Anne French, Jolen Bleach, Clean & Clear, Pantene, Parachute etc.
Amrita Rao made her bollywood debut in Raj Kanwar’s ‘Ab Ke Baras’ opposite Raj Babbar’s son Arya Babbar. The film failed at the box office and Amrita went Unnoticed. Her next release was Ken Ghosh’s ‘Ishq Vishk’ which for some strange reasons is remembered as her debut film. She played the girl next door opposite Shahid Kapoor in ‘Ishq Vishk’; the movie became a success and Amrita won the Best Female Debut Award at the IIFA Awards and Sansui Awards. She was also nominated for the Star Screen Award Most Promising Newcomer for ‘Ab Ke Baras’ in 2003 and again for ‘Ishq Vishk’ in 2004.
Amrita Rao has worked in 2004 mega hit Indra Kumar’s ‘Masti’ alongside Vivek Oberoi, Ajay Devgan, Lara Dutta, Ritesh Deshmukh, Aftab, Genelia and Tara Sharma. Her performance in Farah Khan’s ‘Main Hoon Na’ alongside Shahrukh Khan, Sushmita Sen and Zayed Khan received critical appreciation while the movie became the highest grossing film of the year. Later Amrita appeared opposite Shahid Kapoor in ‘Shikhar’, ‘Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi’ and ‘Vivaah’.
Sooraj Barjatya’s Family drama ‘Vivaah’ became the most successful movie of her career while earning her the Star Screen Best Actress Award. The movie became a blockbuster and won several awards. The leading pair of the movie Amrita Rao – Shahid Kapoor won Star Screen Award Jodi No. 1 and Sports World Awards, Jodi of the Year. Amrita also received the award for Most Promising New Talent for ‘Vivah’ at Anandalok Puroshkar Awards.
Amrita has also starred in movies like ‘Deewar’ alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Khanna, ‘Pyare Mohan’ opposite Vivek Oberoi, ‘My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves’ opposite Nikhil Dwivedi, ‘Victory’ opposite Harman Baweja and ‘Shortcut’ opposite Akshay Khanna. Amrita Rao earned huge critical acclaim for her performance in ‘Welcome to Sajjanpur’. Directed by ace filmmaker Shyam Benegal, ‘Welcome to Sajjanpur’ is a Hindi comedy film also starring Shreyas Talpade, Divya Dutta, Ila Arun and Rajeshwari Sachdev among others. Amrita Rao received Stardust Best Actress Award for ‘Welcome to Sajjanpur’.
Amrita Rao featured in a Telugu film for the first time in ‘Athidhi’ in 2006 opposite popular Tollywood actor Mahesh Babu. Surender Reddy directed ‘Athidhi’ became a huge commercial success. Amrita has done cameo appearances in ‘Shaurya’, ‘Life Partner’, ‘Heyy Babyy’and ‘Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai’.
Amrita Rao was honored with the Young Achiever Award at the GR8 Women Awards in 2007. Amrita is presently working on a couple of projects including ‘The legend of Kunal’- a film based on the life of Kunal, the son of great Indian emperor Asoka.
